WHO: Aspartame soda sweetener officially 'possible' cancer cause

(AP) — The World Health Organization's cancer agency has deemed the sweetener aspartame — found in diet soda and countless other foods — as a “possible” cause of cancer, while a separate expert group looking at the same evidence said it still considers the sugar substitute safe in limited quantities.The differing results of the coordinated reviews were released early Friday. One came from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a special branch of the WHO. The other report was from an expert panel selected by WHO and another U.N. group, the Food and Agriculture Organization.The Lyon, France-based cancer agency periodically reviews potential cancer hazards, but doesn't determine how likely they are to cause cancer in their evaluations which range from “possibly” carcinogenic to “probably” to cancer-causing.Aspartame joins a category with more than 300 other possible cancer-causing agents, including things like aloe vera extract, Asian-style pickled vegetables and carpentry w...

Police looking for utility truck driver who struck bicyclist in Lincoln Park

CHICAGO — Police in Chicago are seeking the public's help in identifying a utility truck driver who allegedly struck a bicyclist. The hit-and-run incident occurred July 11 in the 2700 block of N. Lincoln Ave., in Lincoln Park, just before noon.According to police, the female cyclist was struck by a white and black utility truck hauling a trailer. North Carolina community to require US flags on all homes

(NewsNation) — A new neighborhood in North Carolina will require all of its homes to have American flags flying outside.The rule applies to homes in 1776 Gastonia, a 55+ housing development in Gastonia, N.C. Llano County brush fire grows to 150 acres, at least 10 agencies responding

LLANO COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — A brush fire that began burning at a ranch Thursday afternoon has now grown to scorch 150 acres and is 10% contained as of just before 5 p.m.The Llano County Office of Emergency Management posted on its Facebook page that at least 10 agencies are now responding to the fire located near East Highway 71 and County Road 307. Crews also have CR 307 shut down right now due to the ongoing response. Initially, first responders told KXAN the fire began on a ranch property. As of 2 p.m., the growing fire caused no evacuations.
